Once I get further into it, I'm tempted to try this with the book I'm working on right now. Although my title characters mostly just screech at people before killing them.

(although as birds, I suppose they do twitter, after a fashion)

I thought Doc Savage was that green-haired guy that hung out with the Hulk...

(waits for it...)

But for serious, I think this is a pretty good idea. I've seen other creative types like Jeph Jacques tweet as their characters, but not from within the plot of the story. I think this could be as powerful a marketing tool for new writers as podcasting the novel.

Let's pretend like you commented on the right post :P

The problem is not many big publishers are looking at what people are doing with their own stuff on the internet. Not many of them are even looking at what small e-publishers (like Solo Media but, like, actually publishing stuff) are doing. The internet has a lot of potential in this arena, but it hasn't garnered nearly enough attention from publishing companies.

While I think it's where the future lies there's still quite a stigma attached to e-publishing (and podcast novels).

Specifically, a lot of horror/sf/thriller writers are using serialized podcasts to get the attention of agents and publishers. Scott Siegler was the first, but JC Hutchins, Mur Lafferty and others have done so as well.

So it seems in the 21st century we're seeing a mashup of not only the pulp tradition but radio serials as well. Who will be the Orson Welles of our generation?

I am definitely writing what I want, some of it is definitely rough around the edges but that's one of the points of writing, to improve. I'd say poetry is the weakest, but I like to think it's getting better. The bottom line is I'm writing and I'm enjoying it, what more could I ask for?

Wow. I agree with Josh on this one, Jeff. You can't compare a finished book to an idea in your head. But on a more basic level, Jeff, you say you want to write. You need to remove excuses and blocks that prevent you from writing. If thinking about markets keep you from putting words on screen, then don't think about markets.

Considering you have had Between Heaven and Hell/Unification for... 15-20 years... in your head and in a (by your own admission) rough manuscript, you have had that much time thinking about your audience. And you have no book to show for it. So stop thinking about these extraneous issues.

For whatever it is worth, I have read MaxGeek and now Writerly Stuff fairly recently, and I'll say that while the quality may vary, I get the sense that Josh is writing what he wants.

From Jeff's output, I suppose he likes writing about mobile tech. Is that the writing legacy you want, Jeff?
