Not Paid? What’s the Point?

Let’s face it, I’m not paid for any of my writing, the income from Fictionwise doesn’t cover the cost of hosting. So if I don’t get paid what’s the point in all of this? As I see it there are two kinds of writers, those who write because they just have to and those who write because they can get paid for it. I’m the first type. If one person reads and likes something I wrote, I’m a success (and I know there’s at least one Atlantis fan out there). The other thing is, I have things to say, not just about explosions and Ray Manning kicking ass (if you don’t know who he is, read Atlantis, now, if you want a free copy of the first issue, check back today, I’ll upload a .zip of it in all sorts of formats) but I actually have things to say about all kinds of interesting topics. Atlantis is just what I do for the sheer fun of it. Pantheons and Hollow Man (the second being a project not mentioned before and having absolutely nothing to do with fantasy or sci-fi, straight up fiction, drama really) both have things to say. Bottom line is, if I can get one reader to respond to something I’ve written what does the money matter? I mean who wouldn’t want to get paid to do what they love? But that’s not why I write, I write because I love to write and I’ve got something to say.
